OPPORTUNITY

St. Jude ensures pediatric patients from around the world are taken care of when local physicians can no longer help or have reached the limits of their resources. But what happens when a young patient with a chronic disease like Sickle Cell Disease needs to begin the transition to adult health care? How might we help them navigate the management of their disease, like understanding insurance benefits, filling prescriptions, and making doctor appointments?

APPROACH

The objective was to create an educational virtual reality experience for adolescent Sickle Cell Disease patients who are transitioning into adult care. I mapped out use cases, user needs, and user flows highlighting what would be required at each step, whether it’s community support or education around available choices.

SOLUTION

The St. Jude Virtual Reality App, an educational experience which provides Sickle Cell Disease patients with the tools, knowledge, and community support to help them manage their disease more easily as they transition into the adult healthcare system. Working with a team, we combined design research, user experience, and technology to create an app that equips individuals with the knowledge and tools needed to take charge of their own healthcare journeys and to be their own best advocates.
